Howell Woods

A 2,856 acre "outdoor" classroom of mature bottomland hardwoods forests, natural cypress-tupelo gum swamp/sloughs, mixed pine and hardwood forests, remnant and restored longleaf pine forests, managed fallow fields, as wells natural, manmade and restored wetlands and ponds.

Over 20 miles of trails are available for hiking, horseback, and bike riding. Bird watching is a popular activity on the site as the trails are part of the Bird Watching - Howell WoodsNorth Carolina Birding Trail Network. Several primitve campsites and rustic cabin located on a favorite fishing pond, as well as, numerous fishing areas are available. Hiking is available seven days a week from sunrise to sunset on most trails, reservations and a small fee are required for horseback and bike riding, camping and fishing.

Facilities include a class/meeting room for 36-50 people, several picnic areas and shelters (largest shelter seats 32 people), indoor exhibit hall with native reptiles and amphibians, outdoor enclosures for permanently injured birds of prey, and a natural resource library. There is a very active bird feeding station as well as a native wildflower and organic garden demonstration areas at the Learning Center building.

Two eco-friendly and comfortable cabins are available for short term or long term visits. Wildlife and environmental programs for the general public are offered seasonally as well as other professional and vocational classes. Guided bird watching and other special request programs and tours are also available with timely prior coordination. Multiple species hunting is available for white-tailed deer, feral pigs, waterfowl, grey squirrel, and wild turkey through a paid reservation and/or lottery system.

Normal Business Hours are Monday - Friday, 8am-5pm. Trails and facilities are still accessible during weekends and most holidays. No fees or reservations are required for hiking or picnicking. Fees are charged and reservations required for use of class/meeting room, large group use of picnic shelter, campgrounds, fishing access, horseback riding, educational programs and hunting activities.

Directions : From I-95 take exit 90, US 701 East, Turn on to Devil's Racetrack Road and travel 8.25 miles, look for the green tin roof of the Learning Center on the left.
